Biodiesel, a biofuel substitute for petroleum diesel, is mostly made from soybean oil (estimated at over 90 percent). Biodiesel blends can be used in most diesel engines, with little modification. Because it has similar properties to petroleum diesel fuel, biodiesel can be blended in any ratio with petroleum diesel fuel and is most often blended at the 20 percent level (B20).

Biodiesel can be made from any organic oil source, plant or animal. Soybean oil is currently the most efficient feedstock and provides the best quality end product. A soy oil based diesel fuel tends to have more efficient conversion rates and better flow ability in cold temperatures compared to other oils and fats.
